Vegan Week Challenge

Hellooooo lovely people of the internet!
How are you all? How has 2016 been for you so far? Enjoying it?
I swear this month has just flown by. I hope the rest of the year isn't like this.

I've been really unhealthy lately and, even though I should be avoiding dairy, I've been stuffing myself with chocolate - and we all know what happens when I do that. Cue the cramps and spots and weight gain.  So if you follow me on Snapchat or Twitter (both @qiratulain) then you might know that I decided to do a Vegan-for-a-week Challenge last week. The challenge appeared on an Instagram account I follow @bestofvegan - which has really cool vegan recipes, especially desserts. The account is run by a woman named Kim-Julie Hansen, who has her own blog called Brusselsvegan and she posted the challenge to attempt to be vegan for one entire week. The challenge is free, you just sign up via email and everyday of the challenge, plus three days leading up to the challenge, Kim-Julie sends you emails on what veganism is, how to get used to it and follow it properly without missing out on essential nutrients etc. It really is a great idea, and although I only followed it for five days instead of seven, I'm glad I did it. It's a good way to get a headstart on my dairy-free lifestyle, and my body underwent a mini detox.

FYI - TOM made his appearance last week, and so the need for chocolate was extreme!!! I persevered though and avoided all chocolate, till the last day or two when I discovered dark chocolate was A-Okay!! Other than that though I actually enjoyed the challenge.

I found it quite refreshing to sort of have to think of new recipes or foods to try out, instead of just looking at whats in the freezer. I probably consumed more fruit last week than I did all of last year. Not kidding.

I think there were a few things I learned from my challenge - firstly, it IS POSSIBLE to live without all the junk and rubbish that is constantly shoved in front of our faces. You just have to stick to your guns and carry on. Which brings me to my second point; I discovered something about myself - if I really, truly try hard enough then I can achieve whatever I want. I stuck to the vegan diet (with a few cheats like fizzy drinks, but lets ignore that) and I actually came out better at the end.
I lost 1.6lbs, so I'm on my way to losing weight, and my body was able to detox all the rubbish I had been filling it up with over the past two weeks.
I discovered I get hungry really easily, but that's more to do with boredom or dehydration than anything else, and having some sort of fruit or nuts with me can help satiate any cravings I may have for the baaad stuff!!

I'm definitely going to use some of the stuff I learnt throughout this week, to help get a better lifestyle, a more healthy lifestyle. For starters, I've started to switch to juices or plain water rather than fizzy drinks when going out and opting for snacks like fruit salads or nuts instead of crisps or chocolate.
The main thing is to eat in moderation.

I think that's all for now, this entire month has been a blur, what with exams and assignments, but things are settling down and I'm hoping to do a lot more regular posts.

Till next time
